In this course I learned a lot about many different Islands and their beauty that makes them so unique! I also read many short stories about the Caribbean and its people. I loved the stories! My favorite story was, "Pioneers, Oh Pioneers!" I also was taught by an amazing Professor that has nearly visited every Island we have learned about and has educated us with so much knowledge! I thank her for the short Journey into the Islands! I only hope to visit all the places she has been! Thank you Professor Harris!!!!

The Bahamas are an extraordinary Island that contains a lot of ancient culture traditions, mixed nationality, unique food, and a burst of originality from coast to coast. The Bahamas were originally discovered by European Explorer Christopher Columbus in 1492. Earlier years in the Bahamas were very harsh due to European settlement. In the year 1973 was a time for change within the Bahamas. The reason being was the Bahamas regained full control of what was rightfully theirs to begin with. Year 1973 was the mark for total independence and freedom within the Island. Today the Island is visited with more than millions of tourist each year due to its beautiful landscape and remarkable landmarks. The Climate there is tropical marine and contains clear warm waters of the Gulf Stream. The nationality there is mainly African American by 90.6%. The other ethics groups would include Caucasian by 4.7%, African American and Caucasian by 2.1%, other by 1.9%, and unspecified by 0.7%. One Interesting fact about Citizenship in the Bahamas is that you naturally don’t have to be born in the Bahamas to be a national citizen. So in other words anybody living in the Bahamas at this second is considered a national citizen. In the Bahamas there are specifically only two main languages used. The two main languages spoken in the Bahamas is English and second being Creole from among Haitian immigrants living in the Bahamas. Today the Bahamas are one of the wealthiest Caribbean countries. Their economy alone is heavily dependent on tourism and offshore banking. Tourism together with tourism-driven construction and manufacturing accounts for 60% of GDP. Tourism in the Bahamas employs half of a single strip of Islands labor force. Today the Bahamas are the number one place to visit while on the holidays. The Island continues to grow as more and more come to visit this breathtaking Island.
